3rd Thirstday Night Café focuses on Mexican American history

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University Professor Emeritus Santos Vega
will discuss, “Mexican American History and Culture in Transition”
during 3rd Thirstday Night Café from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the
Tempe Historical Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave., (southwest corner of
Rural Road and Southern Avenue). Doors open at 6 p.m. The event is free.

About the discussion:

What is today the United States’ Southwest was once Mexico’s northern
frontier (1821 to 1848), and before that the Provincias Internas or
Internal Provinces of Spain. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the
U.S. and Mexico ceded the Southwest to the U.S. after the U.S. – Mexico
War from 1846 to 1848. Since then, the combined population of Mexicans
and Mexican Americans, in southwestern cities founded by their ancestors
such as San Francisco and San Antonio has grown to 18 million. There
have been a number of social, political and cultural experiences that
caused Mexican Americans to seek ways and means to combat challenges,
with solutions including mutual aid societies, nonprofit organizations,
labor unions and political organizing. These activities have produced
many Mexican American social and political leaders.
